Very sadly today Tamarillo was put to sleep – at 23, age had simply caught up with the 2004 Badminton winner.

Bred by the Guinness family at the Biddesden Stud, he was foaled by Jo Richardson who followed his career closely.

Tamarillo struck up an amazing partnership with William. Firstly winning the 2* at Blarney in 2000, and then finishing 2nd at Blenheim that season.
In 2002 he was 2nd at Badminton, and that performance secured him a place in the team that won bronze in the World Equestrian Games in Jerez that year. In 2004 he fulfilled William’s lifetime ambition by winning Badminton, and went on to compete at the Athens Olympics in the same year. In 2005 he was second at Badminton again, and went to Blenheim for the Europeans, where he won individual silver and team gold. In 2006 he represented Britain for the final time at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, and was part of the team that won silver. He rounded off his stellar career in 2008 with an emotional win at Burghley. He earned 1636 British Eventing points, and was one of the world’s most successful eventing horses, and his huge personality came through in his performances earning him fans worldwide.

He has spent a long and happy retirement under the watchful eye of Jackie Potts – who travelled with him to every major championship and did the most wonderful job in keeping him in peak condition for so many years, he was in great shape right until the end.

We are so sad for MW, Finn, Rebecca and Rory Guinness, who have owned and cherished him throughout his life.

All of us at Fox-Pitt Eventing will miss him hugely.

In William’s words, “he had an incredible presence, he was one in a million and I feel very lucky to have partnered him for all those special years”

“ Tamarillo was a great character and one of the most talented horses I was fortunate enough to come across. He had a fantastic record and was a major contributor to several medals for the British Team. At Crofton Stracciatella went well and had a clear round, Annaliese had two clears and claimed a 2nd place in her class and Imbroglio flew round and was in 1st place–with quite a few to go–when they headed home.

At West Wilts Dunlewey Red Kite and Schokolade both went fantastically with two clear rounds , coming first and second in their class–the pony, having a slightly more accurate time,  just pipping the chestnut to the win.

Katey headed back to Crofton the following week with Imbroglio and Persiflage both of who were on good form and jumped well.

“After the marathon in 2011, Bakst went on to do two FEI 1 star races (80 km) in 2012 at King’s Forest and then Euston Park, both of which he won fairly easily. We then did a 2 star (126km) which was progressing satisfactorily until I was forced to retire as a result of dehydration and heat stroke; needless to say Bakst had passed the vet but his rider did not.

Unfortunately in March 2013 he was diagnosed with a suspensory ligament injury which caused the loss of the entire 2013 season and a little beyond. During that time, after four weeks box rest, I was able to walk out and gradually increase the distance and bring in trotting and later canter, but no fast work. With the clear scan in March this year I could commence fast work.

I then did two graded rides before entering the FEI 1 star at Barbury Castle, which was held yesterday. I was unsure what to expect of Bakst, not knowing for certain how fit he was. I need not have been concerned as, despite the presence of about 7 UAE riders, he duly won again. It was not easy as two of the Emirates riders finished the second loop with me but, because of their extremely professional crewing arrangements, they presented to the vet slightly before me and therefore were able to start the final loop before me. Bakst gradually caught them and we then proceeded at a tremendous speed until we just won in the end. This was quite an achievement as the UAE horses are professionally trained and ought to be fitter. However, Bakst has real speed and can sustain it almost indefinitely.

Bakst has a large body of supporters in the endurance world, many of whom would love to own him. Words like “magnificent” and ” I love that horse” are frequently used when describing him. He is a truly wonderful horse and, despite now being 14, he seems to be still in his prime with his sped and desire undiminished. I am hoping that this will continue for some time, though will have to be cautious of how frequently I ask large questions of him. His temperament is amenable, despite his real desire to race and as soon as we stop he is immediately relaxed.”

Annaliese won the BE100 at Dauntsey finishing on her dressage score of 26.5 and she has now stepped up to Novice and had two pleasing runs at Berkshire College and Aldon.

Imbroglio was placed in her last two runs of the season finishing 7th in the IN at Pulborough and 10th at Aldon in the Intermediate jumping a double clear at both events.

Persiflage finished 5th in the IN at Dauntsey.

The purpose of breeding from a horse of exceptional merit is to carry forward the combination of genes which produced him. This point is obvious and routine in the breeding of racehorses (for the Flat) but it has been impossible to act on it with the geldings that form the vast majority of Competition Horses. Cloning may provide the solution.

The special merits which we felt made Tamarillo worthy of the expense and nuisance involved in the cloning process are the following:
1. He is a big mover.
2. He is an agile jumper–some people may remember him recovering from tripping in Huntsman’s Close and, on another occasion, finding an extra leg coming out of the Quarry at Badminton.
3. He has superb stamina as his wins in heavy rain and sodden ground at Badminton and Burghley demonstrated.
4. He seemed to find demanding Cross Country courses easy, cantering round the Four Star tracks with ears pricked.

The following day Kim and Dave joined the fray with five different horses. Persiflage came away from the show the Anglo Arab Ridden Reserve Champion and Stracciatella won her Part bred ridden class. Rory was heard to remark that you could wander around any part of the showground “and find Katey Cuthbertson competing” but he also was fairly ubiquitous, showing Katey’s two-year-old Persiflage-sired gelding, Oare House Hero, out of a Welsh Thoroughbred cross mare and winning a blue rosette with Scomber in their yearling Part bred class. Piquante rounded out the showing for Malvern, competing in several dressage and showjumping classes acquitting herself admirably showing her increasing maturity.

Sunday was taken up with the one day event at Wilton where Annaliese was doing her first Novice and Imbroglio was competing in an Intermediate section. The event proved to be more of a learning experience than a prize-winning one with Annaliese retiring during cross country and Katey being unseated from Imbroglio when she banked a big table fence before climbing back on and finishing with no more problems.

Across the channel Dace Sainsbury and her Biddesden-bred Pure bred Arab mare Ballota were a hotly tipped pair for the Young Rider World Endurance  Championships in Tarbes, France. Sadly within a few kilometers of the start Ballota was kicked badly in the face by another horse, sustaining a deep cut (requiring six stitches) and fractures just under the eye. She had to pull out of the race. Thankfully both horse and rider are now all right despite the disappointment and are now back on English soil.
