Dunlewey Red Kite

Dunlewey Red Kite is a home-bred stallion by Ashfield Plover out of Dunlewey Ruby. We bought Ashfield Plover at the dispersal sale of the Ashfield Stud which followed the death of its owner the well-known Co Carlow breeder Jimmy Jones. He is by a Carna Bobby stallion and out of a Macdara mare so has the classical pedigree that one might expect for an Ashfield Stud herd sire. Dunlewey Ruby is a mare by Glencarrig Prince, winner at Clifden as both colt and stallion and traces, on the female side, to the Killyreagh Kim daughter Roussalka, one of the influential Dunlewey Stud foundation mares.

Red Kite’s half brother, Dunlewey Roller, has competed internationally at show jumping including jumping 165cm in Puissance competitions.

Red Kite started his ridden career with a double clear at the Bourne Valley Riding Club horse trials at Larkhill in Wiltshire in 2013 and has followed this up with several rounds this year at unaffiliated events. Most recently Red Kite was placed 2nd at a hunter trials at Larkhill.

He is a compact, sturdy and agile pony so should be well suited to breed performance horses and ponies and to contribute to them the renowned pony-clever agility of the Connemara. He has a scopey stride at the canter, particularly so for a pony of his size, and is a handy jumper.

Dunlewey Red Kite has been tested and is clear of the gene for Hoof Wall Separation Disease. He underwent the National Stallion Association Performance Test in August 2015 and was awarded Class 1 status.

Halston Crocodile is a 7-year-old Connemara/Thoroughbred gelding who has recently arrived from Ireland. A lovely eventing prospect he has already gained experience in the hunting field as well as having showjumped and hunter-trialed. Both of his full brothers event and with his lovely paces he is sure to follow suit. Crocodile is very honest and courageous and will jump anything even for an inexperienced rider. He has already been out competing in the UK several times and has chalked up some top placings in unaffiliated events.

Palila has excellent endurance lines on both sides of her family and her siblings include Baskt, winner of the 2011 AHS Marathon, and Gnocchi, winner of the 2013 Exmoor Stag Cup. Palila won her class inhand at the Arab Horse Society National Show in July 2016. She has now been backed and will be turned away to continue her training next year.

Nerini is a lovely mare, rising four, by our home bred stallion Sisyrinchium and out of Nefertiti Bint Nayifah who was bred and is still owned by Manon Somerville of Co. Wicklow in Ireland. Nefertiti comes from the Naseel line of Crabbet Arabians and shows the beautiful eye, neatness and correct limbs that are characteristic of the Nazli family and she has passed these traits to her daughter.

Nerini was exhibited alongside her mother at the Crabbet Convention in 2013.

In 2016 she was broken in, has been hacking out and is proving to be a forward going fun ride. She looks to be a good endurance prospect.

Borago is a race winner, an Open endurance horse and has been placed Show Jumping and in Hunter Trials. In 1997 he broke his back in a freak accident. His amazing temperament enabled Brian and Andrea Boulton of All Around Arabians to help him stand when ever he tried to get up and after six months he began to walk without support. He gradually grew stronger and stronger and in 2001 he won a race at Goodwood, ridden by Sam Morris. Since then he has competed successfully in endurance with owner Yvonne Ruffle.

Drongo was sold as a 4 year old to Brian and Andrea Boulton of All Around Arabians. With the Boultons Drongo won 7 races, became an Advanced Endurance horse, had many wins BSJA show jumping, won many
Hunter Trials and Working Hunters and although he was gelded to be able to enjoy his retirement he has sired offspring successful in racing, jumping and endurance. At 25 years old he is still ridden regularly.

Stracciatella has already had some success in the show ring under saddle including winning her class at the Arab Horse Society National Championships in Malvern in July 2013 and at the Wessex Group Show in 2014. She has begun to compete at eventing and shows promise in all three disciplines. She has an exceptionally nice temperament and would make an ideal competitive horse.

Sorbet is a 7 year old, 16h2 Anglo Arab gelding who is by our Pure bred Arab stallion Sisyrinchium who has sired many sport horses and out of a Thoroughbred mare called Fairies Farewell who was by Broadsword. Sorbet is a superb mover and is now based with the Irish event rider Melanie Young who is part of the U25 High Performance squad. In early April 2015 Sorbet and Melanie won the pre-novice at Monart Equestrian Centre’s unaffiliated event and in early May achieved a 2nd placing at the same venue. On May 10th they won their first affiliated EI100 at Annaharvey after leading from theart. Since then he has placed in the top 10 at every EI100 they have competed in including winning a further event at Killossery Lodge in June and coming 2nd at the National Championships at Ballindenisk in July. Sorbet then stepped up to Novice and placed 2nd at that level in the Tattersalls One Day Event in August. 2016 saw a slow start to the season for Melanie and Sorbet just placing 2nd once at Ballinamona before clinching a 5th place with a double clear at their first CCI* at Camphire in late July.

Mellita was an Anglo Arab mare by the top Thoroughbred event stallion of the day, Master Spiritus, and out of our Arab mare Darya. Mellita was a classic, showy Anglo type and had a late career, after the birth of Tamarillo, as an eventer with Diana Burgess and rose to Intermediate level over the course of just one season.

As a young mare, before becoming a hunter for Mary Guinness, she had one colt by the Part bred, Marathon-winning stallion Tarnik called Telemachus who won many prizes as a young horse and was in the process of being broken in when he suffered a severed tendon in the field. The decision was made to put Mellita back in foal to Tarnik, and Tamarillo was born in 1992.

Mellita died after she was kicked in the field and her hock was shattered.

Tarnik

Tarnik was a Malopolski or Polish Anglo Arab Stallion who was bred at the Janów Podlaski Stud in Eastern Poland. Brought to the UK by Mr and Mrs T Sutcliffe, he was produced, trained and showed by Patrick Kempe. Tarnik won the Part bred Arab Stallion class at the AHS show at Ascot in 1977 and went on to take the Reserve Part-bred Championship. The same year Tarnik proved himself as an all round sports horse, placing in numerous hunter trails and winning the AHS Marathon, just ahead of Lord and Lady Moyne’s Ansty ridden by Finn Guinness, with a record breaking time of 1 hour 36 minutes and 49.5 seconds. From his second position Finn was impressed and sought to have Tarnik on loan for several years where the stallion made a considerable impression on the sports horse stock of the stud including siring the Badminton and Burghley winner Tamarillo.

Although Dhruv died some years ago he is still remembered for his three wins in his stallion class at the AHS National Show. By the world famous sire El Shaklan, Dhruv inherited excellent traits from both sides of his pedigree including light and graceful movement and superb Arab type. His progeny have gone on to excel in the Show Ring and in Endurance. His son, Sisyrinchium, still stands at Biddesden today.

Tamarillo was one of the world’s most successful eventing horses. Tamarillo’s part-Arab pedigree gave him a light and extravagant movement in dressage, and speed, endurance and nimbleness in cross-country and showjumping. He has been an ambassador for both British breeding and Arabian blood. Tamarillo’s breeding is a blend of Arabian and Thoroughbred blood with a touch of Shagya: he is by the Polish Malapolski stallion Tarnik, who was imported to England and won an AHS Marathon and out of Mellita, a prize winning Anglo Arab by the Thoroughbred Eventing sire Master Spititus. Tamarillo and William Fox-Pitt formed a famous partnership, which resulted in Badminton and Burghley wins as well as numerous medals earned while representing their country. Their bid for Gold at the Athens Olympics ended in heartbreak when Tamarillo mysteriously chipped a stifle during his seemingly perfect cross-country round and had to be withdrawn before the final show jumping round. Tamarillo’s popular and successful career ended with the gelding’s retirement in 2011 at the Badminton Horse Trials. Sadly Tamarillo was put to sleep in the Autumn of 2015. A clone of Tamarillo, Tomatillo, was born in June 2013 and it is hoped that he will disseminate this outstanding bloodline.

Anglo Arab gelding by Persiflage and out of Tadorna who is by the Australian Thoroughbred eventing stallion Tower of Magic (also known as Woodmount Magic). Ptolemy has had a fun year learning a lot and has rarely been out of the rosettes when competing. At the AHS National Show he won the Arab Horse Society Premium Performance Scheme High Point Award for Anglos and Part bred Arabians after winning his dressage and being placed at Showjumping and in his show class. He would have won his first One Day Event at Larkhill but had to settle for second place after gathering some penalties for going a touch too fast across the country and he recently finished third with a lovely double clear in his unaffiliated Intro section at Aston le Walls. Ptolemy is a lovely, kind horse who can do anything and just wants to please.
