Bartramia

Bartramia is a 15h Pure bred Arab mare by LVA Maximus, who was European Champion colt before going to Saudi Arabia, and out of our home-bred mare Branta by Dhruv, who was successful in the show ring as a youngster including being Champion Filly at Towerlands and has proved herself as a dam of excellent performance stock. Bartramia has a very sweet temperament and has proved to be an excellent and versatile riding horse. Bartramia won her first outing under saddle at the Wessex Regional Arab Show in May 2013, came third in her ridden class at Malvern in 2014 and is proving to be a keen jumper. She underwent the National Stallion Association Performance Test in August 2015 and was awarded Class 1 status.

Branta

Branta is a home-bred Arab mare by Dhruv and out of Barasingha who traces in the female line to the Polish mare Biruta who we imported in the1960s.

Barasingha was by Magic Argosy and out of the Banat mare Barhouma.

Branta was Junior Champion at Towerlands as a filly and has been an excellent brood mare for us, her most famous offspring being Bakst (winner of the 2011 Marathon) and Gnocchi (winner of the 2013 Exmoor Stag Cup).

Perfect Kossack

Purchased from the 2001 Tersk Sale by Argos Hill Arabians, Perfect Kossack is a Pure bred Arabian straight Russian mare by the famous Balaton. Perfect Kossack was Dutch National Champion foal and has type, femininity and the athletic charisma that made her grandsire Drug European Champion show horse and race horse in the same year. She had two foals by Psyche’s Spirit at Argos Hill before coming to Biddesden where she has had four beautiful offspring, two fillies and two colts, by Sisyrinchium.

Nefertiti Bint Nayifah

Nefertiti was bred and is still owned by Manon Somerville of Co. Wicklow in Ireland. She comes from the Naseel line of Crabbet Arabians and shows the beautiful eye, neatness and correct limbs that are characteristic of the Nazli family. Nefertiti was exhibited at the Crabbet Convention in 2013.

Turkish Candle

Turkish Candle is an Anglo Arab mare who performed well at Eventing and has the features to be the mother of Champions–superb temperament, sound limbs and a naturally correct carriage, especially of head and neck. She is not a big mare but, when asked, she would undertake huge fences without hesitation. Numerous attempts were made to buy her from us; we enjoyed particularly the efforts of a rider who was most definite that would not have a mare! Since retiring from competition she has been to all the best stallions and we have retained a son and two daughters.

The dam of Turkish Candle was a Thoroughbred named Donna Candelabra, the last mare to come from the Lanhill Stud of Mrs A J Sellar. Donna Candelabra was by Don Carlos who was by Charlottesville, the middle distance champion of his year and traces on the female side to the Chasing sire Relic. We had Donna Candelabra at stud for some years and tried several different Arab and Anglo Arab stallions. The sire of Turkish Candle is the Arab Bajazeth whom we bred but sold as a yearling to Mrs Osborne in Cornwall. Years later we were kindly allowed to borrow him back for a season. We wish we had repeated the operation as his foals were all a great success. He was by Dr Houtappel’s Achim and out of our mare Banika. I often think of this ancestress when I see the naturally correct head position of Turkish Candle and her foals.

Thais

A half sister of the legendary Tamarillo as well as being closely related through their maternal lines, Thais was sold as a young horse to the Canadian rider Vanessa Fenwick who competed the mare up to Intermediate level until she was forced to retire with an injury. Thais returned to the UK to be a broodmare at Biddesden and recently came out of retirement for a swansong hunting season before being put in foal to Grafenstolz for 2014.

Estrilda

Estrilda is a hugely capable athlete of a mare with a strumming gallop and boundless enthusiasm for big fences. She is by VDL Emilion, the well known Dutch Show Jumper sire by Wellington, and her dam is Syringa, a home-bred Anglo Arab mare by Cranleigh Swift Reflection out of the 1987 Marathon-winning Anglo Merelina.
Merelina’s dam was Ansty who set the record time for the Marathon which lasted for a number of years when she won the race in 1978.

Tadorna

Tadorna is a refined and elegant home-bred Anglo Arab mare of about 16 hands. She is by the Australian Thoroughbred Tower of Magic (also known as Woodmount Magic), inbred to Star Kingdom the renowned Australian racing sire, and out of our Arab mare Branta (by Dhruv).

Tower of Magic was Open Intermediate Eventing Champion in Australia in 1994 when ridden by Vaughn Jefferis. He had a big gallop and superb amenability and soft paces in the dressage ring. He was brought over to England by Tim Collins who stood him at his Stretcholt Stud in Somerset.

Imbroglio

Imbroglio is a home-bred Part bred Arab mare out of the Anglo Arab Turkish Candle who evented successfully up to Intermediate and by the legendary Dutch showjumping stallion, Indoctro. Since beginning her competitive career Imbroglio quickly climbed the ranks winning at Novice level at Tweseldown and advanced to Intermediate level finishing her competitive career with 38 points. Imbroglio has a full brother at the stud, our young stallion Incognito, who is currently competing. She now has a filly foal by Tomatillo.
